The New America Foundation hosted a discussion yesterday about Iran and Al Qaeda. Professor Daniel Byman of Georgetown University offered an overview of the relationship’s history, some outstanding analysis, and a humble admission acknowledging that the story remains incomplete. Afshon Ostovar, a research analyst from the Center for Naval Analysis, spoke about the utility and purpose of a Shia theocracy maintaining a limited relationship with an arch-Sunni terrorist group like Al Qaeda. Be sure to watch the video since the Iran-Al Qaeda connection is slowly factoring into more and more policy discussions. Byman and Ostovar each deserve credit for their nuanced and thoughtful analysis on a topic which might become a lightning rod if the U.S. and Iran come closer to blows.
